SURFACE PREPARATION Surface must be clean and free of all dirt, rust, oil, grease, wax, soap, loose paint and any other foreign matter. Previously Painted Areas: may be treated with a solution of 2 cups household ammonia in one gallon of water. If mildew is present, remove with household bleach. Be careful never to mix bleach with ammonia. Bare fiberglass: entire surface must be washed with POR-15 Marine Clean® to remove all traces of wax, mold release agents, etc. Next, sand gelcoat with 80-120 grit to obtain a dull, flat, matte surface, then wipe clean with dry cloth. Bare wood: Fill screwheads or holes with POR-15 Epoxy Putty, sand smooth, wipe clean with tack cloth, then prime. Bare Steel or Aluminum: Clean surface with Marine Clean, then spray on POR-15 Metal-Ready for 15 - 30 minutes and wash down with water afterwards. After drying surface thoroughly, apply 1 or 2 coats of POR-15 Marine Rust Preventive Paint. Prime when POR-15 is just dry to the touch with slight finger-drag remaining, usually 3 - 4 hours. Primers: For all light topcoats, use POR-15 Light Primer #640 (off-white); For all dark topcoats, use POR-15 Dark Primer #650 (light gray). Use of a primer is critical, but choice of light or dark primer is a relatively unimportant judgment call. APPLICATION PROCEDURE / PRIMER AND TOPCOAT Thinning: only if necessary, do not exceed 5%. Coverage: 550 sq.ft. per gallon, 140 sq. ft per quart. Sand: with 220 grit sandpaper between coats. Application temperature range: 50 deg F to 90 deg F (10oC - 32oC). Thinner: Use only POR-15 Solvent.. CONTAINS PETROLEUM SOLVENTS: Keep away from heat and flame. To avoid breathing vapors, organic vapor particulate respirators, NIOSH/MSHA approved must be used. Open windows, doors, or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. If you experience eye watering, headaches, or dizziness, increase fresh air or wear respiratory protection (NIOSH/MSHA TC 23C or equivalent) or leave area. Do not smoke during application until all vapors (odors) are gone. To avoid spontaneous combustion during temporary storage, soak soiled rags and waste immediately after use in a water-filled closed metalcontainer. Dry Times: For primers and topcoats to the touch, approx. 2 hours at 75oF. Allow 12 - 15 hours before sanding and topcoating. Cleaning Equipment: Use POR-15 Solvent or lacquer thinner. Do not use lacquer thinner for thinning. USE ONLY WITH ADEQUATE VENTILATION. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. Notice: Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents may be harmful or fatal. HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED. DO NOT USE ON CHILDRENS’ TOYS WHICH MAY BE PUT INTO MOUTH.
